Racism no longer has to be real, to be felt. Something as benign as a magazine cover with Lebron James holding a basketball in one hand and a white girl in the other is now racist. Source:http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080324/ap_e…
Even though the photographer, lebron james, and the model, all had a role in this, and all have made it clear there was no race issue involved, the magazine cover is ‘racist’. Racism now has become completely abstract, and as a result loses its power. Situations can be racist now, The African American character that dies first in a horror movie, the black guy cast as a gangster, all become racist. Does the way we throw out the word racist make it lose its power? The same word used to describe the cover, isused to describe cross burnings “Racism” The word is abstract, it can mean everything, or it can mean nothing. The word has gone from powerful, to symbolic, to abstract, to nothing. Is the word used too much? not enough?

are you an idoit. .how is that racist. HE IS a BASKETBALL PLAYER FOR GODS SAKES.. he is famous for playing basketball and is good. so MABYE its a magazine and mabye they wanted to choose him cause i dont know why not choose a black basketball player. YOUR basically saying its wrong to do that. THis country is redilous. There is racism for all races. though thats not racism i see it as A basketball player holding an item that he plays with with a model on a cover. THey both get paid to do it. .how is that racism.
wait never mind…i thought you didnt like the cover. I think its fine. though i think its stupid that people make a big deal about it like on that articale.. there being racist by saying that cover shouldnt be allowed
yeah sure
The word racism is used for the wrong situations. The cover with Lebron James and Gisele was not racist. But the responses to the cover were racist. I think we have to put everything in perspective and keep it simple. Also, what may seem hurtful and racist to me, may mean a hill of beans to you.
I KNOW RIGHT, I SAW THE MAGAZINE COVER TODAY IN THE STORE AND I KIND OF THOUGHT TO MYSELF “WHAT TF”?
I think Vogue sales just went down and they needed something to talk about. I almost googled vogue to see the cover..but then google analytics would have shown more hits, and then there would be more investments in nonsense.
I agree to a certain extent. The word “Racism” through the misuse by people has evolved to cover a larger demographic of people and has loss it’s power. From my understanding racism is defined by power. The power to manifest racial hatred that has a negative impact on a person or persons life. The picture of Lebron James on Vogue could be view as insulting and insensitive but the same was said about Terrell Owen in the Monday Night Football promo of Desperate Housewives. This is why it’s important to turn off the TV and read a book for enlightenment or educational value. Go to the park and feed the pidgeons and squirrels. Spend time with the elderly in a nursing home. Volunteer to help someone. Do something constructive.
Racism is out there for those who don’t do for themselves and depend on others to give them fair and equal treatment. Again it is power that defines racism. Nothing else.
