Anyway, if I had wanted a "pep talk" I would not talk to my dad, I would either talk to my boyfriend who supports my goals OR just remember all the pep talks my mom and grandparents gave me over the years they were on this earth. Find your bliss - and support - where you can, and if it's just something your dad isn't capable of, find the support from plenty of other people who also care about you. I don't stress about my dad being a huge grouch, and neither should you.

Good luck :)

Like the old saying/song goes..."it's your thing, do what you wanna do."

The thing is, it's taken me til I was 35 to know this, and I AM doing "the phoenix thing" because it allows me to facillitate the other 90% of life and carry out my responsibilities to my family.

My dad isn't all that supportive, either. I tell him I got all A's AGAIN and he says, "I know you did - you always do. I don't want to hear what your grades are - I want to know if you're actually LEARNING anything."

Hello?! Well, doesn't it stand to reason if I am getting all A's, then I am learning QUITE a lot? I didn't just pull those good grades out of my hat or get them for my good looks, now did I? I worked REALLY hard.

Also, socializing is great, but think back (depending how old you are, this may be less time to think back on), but guess how many people I actually spend time interacting with that I "socialized" with in High School...NONE. That's right - aside from occasionally checking in on FB or MS or what-have-you, I don't actually see any of these people or spend a lot of time even talking to them there.

We are all busy with our careers and families and don't have time to expend energy or resources "feeling connected" with these people. And they aren't paying our bills, either. Our FAMILIES have become the center of our universe, which they should be. Knowing these are my views doesn't hurt anyone's feelings, either - they all know exactly where I am coming from.

Also, given the whole career/family balance many people experience and question what is "more" important, I have this firmly figured out. I do BOTH, and it IS possible. My family knows I work so hard because I want to give them the best I can. If I am at work, it directly benefits my family. When I get home, I give them all the time I can, and they know this and don't feel disconnected or deprived in any way.

Truth be told you don't need a degree to be successful! college was all about socializing, however it does prepare you for whatever type of work you want.
I do have an engineering degree and college did help me with that! You can't be an engineer nor get paid engineering money if you don't have that piece of paper (degree)... so figure out what you want to do, and then consider do I really need that piece of paper.
Seriously the cost of college vs. the rewards sometimes is not worth it if what you want to do is not a professional career.
Talk to a guidance councelor dude... she could help you out. But basically if you want to be paid the big bucks get a degree in something that you like and pays the big bucks. But for example you can make a very decent living joining the Armed forces... they pay extremely well, feed you and give you money for clothes and housing and you don't really need a degree for it! So figure out what you want to do and go for it! But in the case of if you want to join the Armed forces it makes no sense to go to college spend the money and then join the armed forces... be smart about it!
That's it good luck pal!
