Iam Looking For Any Ancestors Of Richard Carter, From Youngstown, Ohio?

My grandmother had an affair with a married man, while she was a nanny working for his family. He owned or operated the movie theater there in Yongstown, Ohio. He had three kids. My grandma has since died and promised she would tell us about our grandfather before she died, but she died first. She left Ohio in 1935 in shame and renamed our last name ,”Richards”I am assuming his middle name may be Earl, because that is my fathers, just an assumption. I would love to know if I have any family out there. I went my whole life not knowing about a big part of the missing piece of imformation, and of course not knowing what my grandfather was like.

  2. I was curious, so I looked at the images. The first one Zena Rae found for you looks like him.
1930; Census Place: Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio; Roll: 1843; Page: 149A; Enumeration District: 37; Image: 996.0.
Carter, Richard C., head, rents $25/mo, 30, age at first marriage 21, b. Penn, father b. Nova Scotia, mother b. Germany, occupation MOVING PICTURE OPERATOR, Industry Theater, “Veteran” column says “Yes”.
    —-, Ruth A., wife, 23, a@fm 17, BP’s all Penn
    Children, all P. Ohio,
    Richard Jr, 4 8/12ths
    Robert J, 3 1/12th
    Raymond, 1 4/12ths
Patrick H, daughter, 2/12ths (says “Female”, too). This isn’t the first person I’ve seen whose sex is mixed up on a census form.
    Genevieve W Livermore, 55, housekeeper
The fact they were rich enough to have a housekeeper in 1930 hints strongly they could afford a nanny (one younger than 55, to boot) in 1934.
You’ll also note that is the A @ FM numbers are accurate, Ruth is Richard’s second wife; he was FM 9 years ago, she 6.
The family just above Richard is a Henry J. Hamen, 33 and his wife Lillie, 42. They were both 17 @FM, which hints this is their second. They live in a $15,000 house which they own. He too is a “Moving Picture Operator”. If I was guessing, I’d guess Henry married a rich widow 9 years his senior.
The fact three of the four were 17 at FM is odd; most men I’ve seen were at least 18, and often 20, before their first marriage. It is possible the enumerator put “17″ by mistake.
I looked at the image again. The Hamens and Carters both live at 421 Early Road. The Hamens are family 411, the Carters family 412. It looks like Richard works for Henry. (Maybe; it is physically possible he works for a competitor, but . . .)
My grandfather bought a small standard home – 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom – for $5,000 in 1927. A $15,000 house would be a modest mansion in Ohio in 1930. The other homeowners on the census sheet have houses worth $7,000, $4,000 and $7,000 again.
Carter is tough, because it is so common. There is a chance that Lillie is Richard’s older sister, or they are related some other way. You might try for the Hammen’s death dates, then their obits to see if they mention Richard.
The LDS SSDI allows you to use a birth date with a range. I found
    1. Richard CARTER – U.S. Social Security Death Index
Birth: 6 Jun 1899 State Where Number was Issued: Ohio Death: Nov 1967
    2. Richard CARTER – U.S. Social Security Death Index
Birth: 16 Nov 1903 State Where Number was Issued: Ohio Death: Jul 1971
The first one there might be your Richard. The birth year is close enough. He died in KY, though. Your Richard may have moved to Arizona and died in 1996, too.

Eva Carter 44 Widow, b. Germany
Richard Carter 21 Penn (As are the rest)

    But WAIT -
1910; Census Place: Pittsburgh Ward 25, Allegheny, Pennsylvania; Roll: T624_1308; Page: 14B; Enumeration District: 625; Image: 122.
    Place: Protestant Orphanage of Pittsburg
    Richard Carter 11
    William Carter 9
    Frances Carter 6
All three have relation to Head of Household “Orphan”, Father b. Germany, Mother b. Germany
It could be Eva adopted three; it could be she could not afford them and dumped them in 1910, then took them back by 1920.
