obviously spoiler alerts, and this is what i remember so it may be a bit screwy (like the movie wasn’t huh?)
kimberly thinks she must die in order to save the others. so she goes in the lake to drown herself, but she’s revived by the dr who she saw in her vision earlier (she thought the dr was choking someone, but it just appears that way). supposedly she now thinks because she has “new life”, it’ll stop with her.
as for if they really are or not, i’ve heard people say in one of the DVD specials (on 2 or 3, i can’t recall) that they got knocked into a wood chipper and killed anyway.

i cant remember everything that happened in part too (theres so many of them now lol). but i can say for sure that death eventually comes for them after the boy dies.
i think the point in all the movies is that they can’t escape no matter what.
even the very last one (so far) when they are on the train, they didn’t escape
